TRAINING

– POLICE & PEACE OFFICERS

This basic course of instruction for police / peace officers consists of 5 consecutive days (minimum of 40 hours) of mountain bike training covering the following areas of instruction.  

• Nutrition for the mountain bike officer.
• Cardiovascular fitness for the mountain bike officer (target heart rate).
• Saddle, knee, hand, and foot injuries.
• Stretching.
• Slow speed balance drills.
• Hypothermia and dehydration.
• Effective Cycling video and lecture.
• Training rides.
• Accident prevention for the mountain bike officer.
• Safety equipment, uniforms, and accessories.
• Proper bicycle fit.
• Emergency braking.
• Gears and cadence.
• Firearms.
• Police technical skills

Requirements:  Applicants must be currently assigned to bike patrol, officers applying to become members of a bike unit, or members of a department considering use of the bicycle.  All students will be “on duty” while attending the training and the course registration form will be completed by an authorized department supervisor prior to the student being able to participate. 

Testing Procedure:  Students must: participate in all practical exercises, be able to successfully demonstrate all of techniques to the satisfaction of the Instructor(s), and pass the written examination by a score of 80%.

Certification:  Students who meet the qualification standards will be issued a certificate of completion from Trident until the State’s or the association’s certificates are issued. 

Registration Fees (In New York State):  $150.00 NYS DCJS Course / $175.00 for LEBA Courses (NYS DCJS Certification is included) / $200.00 for IPMBA Courses (NYS DCJS Certification is included)
(if contracted out by another hosting agency - we request 10 students per class) 

Registration Fees (Out Side New York State):  $375.00 per student - minimum of 10 students is required)
